Die Schule

Wir sind in der Schule. Das Zimmer ist groß und hell. Der Tisch ist klein aber neu. Der Stuhl ist alt, er ist nicht sehr schön. Das Buch ist grün. Der Bleistift ist gelb, er ist lang und neu. Die Tinte ist schwarz, und das Papier ist weiß. Die Tafel ist lang und schwarz. Aber das Stück Kreide ist kurz und weiß.

Ist die Tinte gut?
--Nein, sie ist nicht gut, sie ist zu dick.

1. Gender

There are three genders in German: masculine, feminine, and neuter.

Important In German, all nouns begin with a capital letter, regardless of their location in the sentence.
As a beginner, use this rule to easily tell apart nouns from other parts of the sentence.

2. The Definite Article

The definite article has the following forms in the nominative singular:

der before a masculine noun: der Tisch the table
die before a feminine noun: die Tinte the ink
das before a neuter noun: das Buch the book

Important Names of lifeless objects, as well as of living beings, may be of any gender.
For this reason, when learning a German noun, always learn it with its corresponding definite article.

3. Personal Pronouns er, sie, es

In the nominative singular, whether denoting a living being or a lifeless object, a masculine object (person) is referred to by er (literally, he), a feminine by sie (literally, she), a neuter by es (literally, it). Examples:

Ist der Tisch klein? Ja, er ist klein.
Is the table small? Yes, it (literally he) is small.
Ist die Tinte schwarz? Ja, sie ist schwarz.
Is the ink black? Yes, it (literally she) is black.
Ist das Buch grün? Ja, es ist grün.
Is the book green? Yes, it is green.
